After Loss: A Widow and Widower's Guide

Standing your ground, rebuilding the plan, and authoring what comes next.

How to read this playbook

Loss rearranges everything, including money, at the worst possible moment to think about it. Systems that one person understood are now yours to learn. Property you assumed was safe may need defending. In-laws who were family can become a question. This guide walks beside you through that season, gently and practically, without ever asking you to hurry your grief or pretend you are further along than you are.

It is written in the order the days actually come. It does not begin with estate strategy, because the first ninety days are not the time for strategy. It begins with steadying yourself, understanding the system you inherited, answering your children's questions about money and grief, and taking honest stock of who is truly in your corner. Only when the ground is steadier does it turn to the longer work.

The fifteen guides move through four movements, and they are meant to be read slowly. The First Season is for the earliest, hardest weeks. Standing Ground is for protection: the property defence file, the shift in the relationship with in-laws, rebuilding income as one, and getting back onto the ladder. Rebuilding the Plan is the work of authorship: remaking a plan that was built for two, deciding what to do with a business they left, learning to lead the family council alone, and holding the year-two review that marks how far you have come. Authoring What Comes Next is about the future you are allowed to want: loving again and planning again if you choose to, teaching what you learned the hard way, and holding both the legacy you continue and the new one that is now yours to author.

Move at your own pace. Some readers will take one chapter a week and that is right. LegacyPot pauses everything during grief by design: no streaks to lose, no scores, no nudges, only a quiet place to keep what matters until you are ready to return to it. Keep the documents, the plan, and the story there, reachable by the people who help you carry this. You did not choose this season. You can still choose how you walk through it, and what you build on the other side.
