Deposits Into Children

You track every deposit into your savings. Almost nobody tracks deposits into their children, and those are the ones that compound longest.

Where it comes from

Billy Graham, in Leaving a Legacy, writes as a man looking back on decades away from home, and his conclusion is not about pulpits. "Family life is an important part of our discipleship," he writes. The word choice is deliberate. Discipleship is daily, unglamorous, and cumulative, and Graham's point is that the formation of your children belongs in that category, alongside the practices you would never skip, rather than in the category of things you get to when the season calms down.

Why it works

Everything this research corpus keeps finding about families that hold wealth across generations comes back to transmission, and transmission runs on contact. Values, money language, work habits, and the feeling of being securely backed all pass through ordinary minutes of attention, the same way a Pot grows through ordinary deposits. The mechanism is identical: small, regular, boring, unstoppable. A parent who invests ten minutes a day has made over sixty hours of deposits in a year, and unlike the grand annual gesture, daily deposits arrive when the child actually needs them, on the day of the failed test or the playground betrayal. The reverse is also true. Skipped days compound too, silently, the way a paused standing order does, and the balance only becomes visible years later, when it is expensive to rebuild.

The habit

Treat it exactly like a standing order.

  1. Pick a fixed ten-minute slot each day, tied to something that already happens: after supper, the walk to the stage, lights out.
  2. In that slot, the child has all of you. Phone in another room. No fixing, no lecture queued up. Their agenda, however small it sounds.
  3. If you have several children, give each a claimed slot across the week and keep one shared moment daily, but make sure every child knows which minutes are theirs alone.
  4. Log it. One tick per day, the same way you would confirm a deposit landed. On the days travel makes presence impossible, a real call counts. Silence does not.

Daily is the non-negotiable part. Children do not experience your love as an annual average. They experience it today.

How LegacyPot nudges it

In the Habits module, LegacyPot places this beside your financial deposits on purpose: "You track deposits into your Pot. Track deposits into your children too. Ten minutes today counts." A daily check-in and a visible streak give the ten minutes the same standing as the standing order, because in this ledger they outrank it.

This week

Choose the ten-minute slot, tell your child it belongs to them, and make the first deposit tonight.
