How Do You Choose a Guardian for Your Children?

You choose a guardian by filtering candidates in a fixed order: values first, means second, age third. Then you ask the person face to face before writing their name, and you record the appointment in your will with an alternate named beside them. The whole process takes about two weeks: one evening to shortlist, one visit to ask, one session to put it in writing.

Values first. The guardian re-parents your children. Would you want them to absorb that home's faith, its honesty about money, its treatment of women, its attitude to school? A no disqualifies the candidate, however wealthy or however senior in the clan.
Means second, because means can be supplied. A loving home with modest income is a solvable problem; that is what your life insurance, education pot, and the estate's trust portion exist for. A wealthy home with wrong values is not solvable by any document.
Age realistic. A guardian who is 68 when your youngest is 3 must parent until 83. Choose someone likely to be healthy through your youngest child's twenty-first year, then name a substitute anyway.

Ugandan law shapes the shortlist: the guardian must be an adult Ugandan citizen, you appoint them in your will as The Will-Writing Session sets out, and a court confirms the appointment before it takes effect. Your written choice is the starting point the court works from. Without it, the court works from whoever shows up.

Then have the conversation. Sit with your first choice, explain what the role would mean, confirm that money is attached so they would not carry the cost alone, and give them two weeks to think. A no now is a gift; a yes they do not mean is a trap for your children. Repeat with the substitute. Finally, write the appointment into the will and pair it with a guardianship letter covering care wishes, property rules, education instructions, and the education pot's rules, then hand the guardian a physical copy.

The common mistake

Naming someone without asking them. A guardian who learns of the role at the funeral is a plan that half exists, and one who would have declined is a plan that fails at first contact. The honorary appointment, the eldest brother or the expected clan pick chosen to keep the peace, is the same mistake wearing a gown.
